Release November 7, Possible Reasons for a Bad WiFi Signal The strength of your WiFi signal can be negatively influenced by a number of different factors, including: Physical obstacles: Like all other forms of wireless communication, WiFi signals have a limited ability to pass through solid physical obstacles.

While you might not always be able to avoid all large physical obstacles, you should at least try to keep your router away from them and use a WiFi signal strength app to measure the loss of your signal strength. Distance from router: The WiFi signal emitted by your router becomes weaker and weaker the farther away you get from the router.

By measuring WiFi signal strength in different parts of your home or office, you can create a signal strength heatmap to visualize your coverage and see all areas of signal weakness at a glance. Signal interference: There are many electronic devices that emit electromagnetic waves in the radio spectrum from 30 Hz to GHz. Examples include baby monitors, garage door openers, kitchen appliances, walkie-talkies, security cameras, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, and, of course, other WiFi routers.

Router settings: Modern WiFi routers support multiple bands most commonly 2. They also come with a whole host of performance-enhancing features, some of which may need to be manually enabled and configured.

WiFi leeches: The term WiFi leeches is used to described people who search for unsecured networks using WiFi signal strength apps and other tools and connect to them without asking for a permission. The good news is that WiFi leeches can be easily repelled using strong encryption, which all modern routers support.

Wireshark — is the polar opposite of WiFi Analyzer. NetSpot is our favorite WiFi signal strength meter app because it combines simplicity with powerful features at an affordable price. Changing between these two distinct modes of operation is as simple as flipping a switch, and the same ease of use is characteristic for the rest of the software. Discover mode Reflects the rate of data transfer from user to the Internet. Wifi Heatmap. WiFi Analyzer. Not Enough Ratings. Wifi Analyzer.

In many ways, Wireshark is the polar opposite of WiFi Analyzer. Just like NetSpot, Wireshark can satisfy the needs of network professionals, but it largely disregards the needs of beginners. The best WiFi signal strength So what signal strength should you be content with?

It depends on the tasks you expect to be fulfilled. For example for sending and fetching emails, browsing the Internet, or scanning barcodes, dBm is a decent signal strength. If you are going to use higher-throughput apps, dBm is more suitable. Don Heckman Feb pm. Best Network Meter Made! Ditto to Mr. Desmarais comment. Basically I need to understand how much data I am passing to and from the Internet rather than how much is being passed on the local subnet.

Cox limits me to a certain number of GB. It would be great if this Gadget could track Internet usage only. Even better if it could watch both. Asif Shaikh Feb am. Best Gadget in the world! The best gadget in the world! I use them a long time, the Version 9. I'm very grateful for this highly useful network meter! Lucas Feb am. Great support! Not only best gadget but also best support! Way to go! Thank you so much. Can't live without it. Ibot Feb pm. But i think i have a problem with my standard browser firefox.

It can't shows the Data Usage Chart. Microsoft Internet Explorer can show the chart perfectly. Terry Kemp 7-Feb pm. IP Lookup This is the best gadget in the world!

I use it all the time! Mike 4-Feb pm. Very well written, timely updates, useful information. Denis Desmarais Jan pm. The total of usage. The total is based on what pass by the card itself. So far so good but if you have an internal network with media servers and network NAS, the total of usage use that information as well. I think trafic usage should not include local network. I don't know if that gadget reads this information thru the Kernel or thru the card but if it is in the kernel than it should be easy to mask the local communication.

Otherwise, great gadget. Jhulio Solis-Fondeur Jan pm. Speed test I just loved it as well as the new version of the Network Meter.

I downloaded Drives Meter as well. I've been using the Network Meter for about 4 years now and continue to be very pleased with it.

It's very user friendly and my friends and relatives use it as well and love it too. We all appreciate the opportunity to benefit from these quality free gadgets in a world that's so money minded. Keep up the good work! Thank you very much!

Peter Jan pm. Just great Great set of gadgets. I use them a long time. Just the new firewall check does not detect my 3rd party firewall. I run Comodo. Would be great if it would detect it. Dickvo Jan am. Network meter 9. I have tried several and this is the one shows the activity.

Ryan Jan pm. Except for the new "firewall check" feature not detecting my 3rd-party firewall software, the tools have been flawless.

I am also happy to have found at AddGadgets a solution to enable gadgets in Windows 8 by using 8GadgetPack. Digiti Jan am. Version 9. Thank you very much. Mathieu Bois Jan pm. Know what is happening Very handy to know when a download or upload starts and stops. Also handy to know the max bandwidth you can really use on your ADSL connection when you full load it. It helped me in the past when I had problems on my line, and also when I travel, to prevent me from doing big downloads if the bandwidth is poor.

Randomizer27 Jan pm. Best All of these widgets look so professional instead of the other ones that lack the color and official theme that these widgets have. I love it! Joe Jan pm. Can't live without it Been using this since about version 3 and it's just become completely indispensable to me. The new versions get better and better. Keep up the good work. Marksthespot Jan pm. Keeps Getting Better This tool is indespenable for troubleshooting network issues with my ISP and it just keeps getting better!

Jivix Jan pm. Fantastic gadget This is one of the very few gadgets still being updated many gadgets have disappeared with the Microsoft gadgets repository , and it gets better all the time.

Some of my favorite features are: -Ability to set the amplitude of the graph to any amount you need for your network. Kevin B. I really enjoy this and all of the gadgets here. The information provided is invaluable and immediately accessible when needed. Thank you for making them.

If you would be kind enough to accept a suggestion for feature addition I would ask that you provide the ability to show the IP address of multiple nics. Similar to the drive tool that displays data from as many drives as the user specifies. I believe that this would be very beneficial on laptops especially where you may have both nics connected at times.

Thank you again! Robert 9-Jan pm. Great Tool I love this tool and run it on all my windows machines so I know if I'm getting the bandwidth I'm paying for and whether I'm even connected. Steve 6-Jan pm. Excellent gadget Overall, it works great, however it does not seem to recognize that I have AVG's firewall running.

Something for the next version. Keep up the great work! Sohail Baloch 3-Jan am. Very Good for Monitoring Your Net Performance I have found it very helpful in monitoring my net quality and performance.

Gary 3-Jan am. Almost There! I love the features of the tool in Windows 7. The firewall information is interesting too, but there is an issue with the "Profile" setting, which doesn't accurately reflect the interface associated with the "For Speed" or "For Internal IP Address", at least on my system.
